Knitted fabrics and weaved fabrics differ from each other in quality in the sense that knitted are more elastic due to the threads running consecutively to each row whereas weaved pieces of cloth are less stretchable since they have the threads intertwined in a cross-wise pattern.
Knitting is the form of stitching that uses the threads to form thick cloth material. The threads in a knitted fabric run parallel and they are made by forming loops. These loops of thread are the foundation of the intertwined network of threads. Textile aficionados call the threads that run parallel to each other bights and a small piece of knitted fabric is known as a swatch.
The fabrics are made by a variety of threads, colors and ever types of needles used, which decides the quality of the final material. The word Knit was derived from the word Knot since the process involves creating loops or knots while linking one row with another.
Knitting is done by pulling the current thread through the loops of the preceding row which is again made into a loop as the basis of the next row. Knitted fabric is thick and has good water retention and thermal properties. Due to the structure and thermal properties of the fabric, this kind of stitches is used for making warm clothes, and threads such as yarn are used for knitting. Also, unlike weaving, there is no need to use special yarn for knitting.
For a beginner, it might take about 20 to 25 hours to create a cardigan with a simple design. But for an expert, these hours of knitting are reduced to 9 to 13 hours. Plain Weave: The most basic weave out of the three is plain weave. The warp and weft are aligned in a simple criss-cross pattern in the plain weave.
Twill Weave: Twill weave is a type of weaving that has a diagonal parallel ribs pattern. In this technique, the weft thread crosses over one or more warp threads and then under two or more warp threads and so on. This structure composition of twill enables the fabric to drape easily. Twill also has different front and back sides. The examples of twill fabric are chino, denim, drill, gabardine, serge, and tweed. Satin Weave: As the name suggests, the satin weave is known for its lustrous and silky appearance.
There are two main types of knitting called weft and warp knitting. While weft knitting requires a single yarn, warp knitting makes use of a separate yarn for every course or row. Warp knitting can only be done by a machine and is used for the manufacture of hosiery that is the backbone of all lingerie stuff. On the other hand, weft method of creating fabric out of a single yarn is what has traditionally been employed in hand made fabrics. However, modern machines use a different method under this system of knitting called weft to create fabrics.
All woolen garments and hosiery garments available in the market that are stretchable belong to knitting category. Stretch ability is the biggest characteristic of all knitted garments.
Some types of knitting practiced by manual knitters are flat knitting, circular knitting, and felting. Compared to knitting, weaving seems to be a much older craft, as some findings have indicated that it has existed since the Paleolithic era. The Bible also points out several instances of weaving being practiced by Egyptians. Unfortunately, in the modern world, hand weaving is already close to non-existent, as fabrics are mostly designed and created in factories. Some examples of weave structures are the plain, twill, and satin weaves.
However, with computer generated interlacing, numerous other weave structures are available in our modern times. Moreover, knitting can be done individually or in a group as a hobby, and it has also become a social activity.
Its popularity has given birth to different knitting clubs formed by knitting enthusiasts who not only knit together, but share patterns, designs, and newly finished products with each other. Weaving is still recognized as a popular craft, but due to its complexity, most processes for clothing fabrics are done in factories with machines that make the procedure much faster and easier.
That being said, do not expect to encounter weaving clubs composed of housewives getting together to share weaving patterns like they do in knitting clubs.
Weaving involves a bigger and heavier piece of equipment — the loom. Cite APA 7 Franscisco,.
